Dynaudio Contour 1
The D
ynaudio
Contour 1 was produced from circa 1989 to 1991. It was among the first
Contour range, along with the Contour 2 and 4.
Then, it was already considered the classic among small speaker systems.
From the Contour 1 came later a Mk2 version, then the Contour 1.3, and currently
the 1.3 Mk2 and 1.3 SE. There was also a special
version of the Contour 1, known as the Special One.
One of the main differences between the Contour 1 and the current day 1.3 Mk2 is
that the early model is almost a sealed box design, whereas the current model is
a bass reflex (ported) system. The former is 'almost' a sealed box design
because it does indeed have a port, albeit a resistive one, called the Variovent.
This makes it a lower efficiency design, but on the other hand endows it with
superb bass control when driven with sufficient quality watts.
The tweeter is a D28/2 and the woofer a 17W75. The
Mk2 version features a linearized impedence response and phase-correction
circuitry with a frequency crossover slope of 6 dB/oct. This avoids
distorting pulse errors which occurs inevitably with crossovers of higher slope.
Construction and build is of very high quality. The sound is on the whole
very natural, neutral and uncoloured. Treble is clear and sparkling, mids
are transparent and the bass surprisingly extended and well-controlled.
